FUNDS FOR FUZZ

Picture
Orange-and-white tabby cat, named Fuzz, wide-eyed and full of love, looking up with an innocent expression, with the straps of a strawberry shopping bag around him, looks as though he is ready to go shopping.
Fuzz has been my baby since he was two months old. He was rescued from the streets and adopted through the SPCA — back then, he was fiercely independent, didn't need anyone, didn't want to be held. Somewhere along the way, that changed completely. He became my shadow, my alarm clock, always wanting to cuddle, never wanting to be alone.

We made one of the hardest decisions of our lives. We could be selfish and keep him around, knowing how much pain he was in. Or we could put him first and end his suffering. We chose to put him first.
At his last visit to the vet, he had to be slightly sedated because of how stressful it was on him — it took him four days to relax and feel like himself again. It was so hard to see him in such distress, and once we learned the signs of what a cat looks like when it's in pain, it hit us how long he had actually been in pain for. Cats aren't very vocal about pain — they show it in their body language and their face instead. We knew it wouldn't be fair to him to keep him living for us while he suffered.
We scheduled a vet to come to the house, so he could be euthanized at home rather than somewhere that stressed him.

The last few days of his life were emotionally and mentally exhausting. Trying to spend every second with him, making each moment extra special — it was so lovely, and so devastatingly sad, knowing each one was a last. There were never enough kisses or hugs. Every time I pet him, I tried with all my might to remember how it felt to have him in my hands. We made a bed out of blankets and pillows on the living room floor for our last night together, and had a sleepover with him. Sixteen years of having him in our lives now came down to counting the hours until we had to say goodbye.

I started sharing this part of Fuzz's journey in hopes of raising funds through my cards to help cover the cost of his care. The journey didn't take the road we wanted it to — but the costs are still something we need to deal with.

I'll continue putting all proceeds from my Friends line of cards toward it.
